Road to Shangri-la!

Your Daily Schedule

Day 1, Oct. 29 • Shanghai

We begin our journey in the booming metropolis and ever evolving of Shanghai where we'll check into our communal flat (aka large Airbnb in the heart of town) . We'll have a group welcome gathering. Acclimate to time zone and explore a bit of this fast-paced city in group, small groups or on your own. Having lived here for several years, we can point you in the right direction!

Day 2, Oct 30 • Shanghai to Dali/Xizhou

Morning flight to Dali, transport to Xizhou. Settle into the quiet calm village of Xizhou before setting out for a visit to the Chongsheng 3 Temples. We'll then spend an evening in Dali Old Town where you can grab a bite of local fare, walkabout the various curios shops, have a cup of tea or coffee and even opt for foot massages!

Day 3, Oct. 31 • Dali/Xizhou

Morning shoot in the (rice, garlic or which ever crop is growing at the time) fields in back of the hotel to catch the sunrise over the Cangshan mountains - truly peaceful way to spend a morning before a cup of Yunnan coffee or tea. After breakfast, we'll head out for a photowalk through Xizhou's morning market to not only erngage with there locals, but to practice our street photography skills. before visiting Zhoucheng town where the local Bai community will show us their Tie-Dye ware's that date back over 1000 years. Day 4, Nov. 1  • Dali/Xizhou to Lijiang/Shuhe

We continue our sojourn northward to leave the serene valley of Dali and hit the road for the endearing ancient town of Lijiang. Along the way, we'll visit the ancient town of Shaxi to witness life unchanged for decades. We'll be practicing our village photography skills here. Upon arrival of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lijiang, we'll stretch out our legs while making our way to the top of Lion Hill to the Wanggu Tower giving us a pano view of old town and the surrounding countryside that's protected by the venerable Jade Dragon Snow Mountains.

Day 5, Nov. 2  • Lijiang/Shuhe 

Morning drive to a Yi village for a natural low-light portrait session with locals with lunch in the village as well. After lunch, we head back down the mountain to the Naxi village of Yuhu and pay a visit to the former residence of Joseph Rock, a famed Botanist who helped bring the Naxi to recognition as a vibrant culture to be forgotten. Then, back to Lijiang or landscape/street shoot around town and Black Dragon Pond.

Day 6, Nov. 3  • Lijiang/Shuhe to Wumu Village

Upon arriving in Wumu, we'll unwind at the hotel and later explore the village on our own to practice our newfound skills in portrait and  village  photography. Group photo share.

Day 7, Nov. 4  • Wumu

Relax and more exploring Naxi village life as the early morning unfolds. Visit a Naxi Dongba to experience ancient Sharman rituals and further practice our low light photography skills.

Day 8, Nov. 5  • Wumu/Lijiang/Shuhe to Shanghai-la

Say goodbye to Lijiang area for the First bend on the great Yangtze River - China's longest river. Visit Shigu Old Town for street, market and environmental portraiture. Witness the majestic Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of China's a largest and widest gorges. Group photo share.

Day 9, Nov. 6  • Lijiang/Shuhe to Shangri la

Morning landscape sunrise photoshoot across from Songzanlin Monastery, reputed as the "Little Potala Palace", followed by a visit inside to experience traditional Tibetan buddhism. Have a leisurely walkabout around the monastery (called a Kora) a daily pilgrimage for local Tibetans. After breakfast, we'll make our way to Shangri-la old town!  Time on your own to unwind, relax and wander about the old town portion of Shangri-la.

Day 10, Nov. 7  • Shangri-la

After breakfast, we pay a visit to Blue Moon Valley to take in the surrounding Tibetan beauty before visiting a Tibetan family to learn the ways of Thanka, a traditional Tibetan art form. We'll visit the Renan and Nixi ancient villages for more photo opportunities! Final group photo critique/share.

Day 11, Nov. 8  • Shangri-la to Shanghai

Fly back to Shanghai.

Transport from hotel to airport provide (one scheduled time)
